USJJF Insurance Program

(Updated February 26, 2005)

As of May 22, 2005 - at the recommendation of the USJJF (USMAF & USYA) Risk Management Committee and the Board of Directors decision, the USJJF (USMAF & USYA) will no longer make available Medical (Accident) Insurance Coverage to its Members. After approximately five (5) years of providing this medical (accident) insurance coverage, the simple fact is that most clubs and members have not been supporting this insurance program. This insurance policy was costing much more than it generated in revenue to justify its continuation. Both instructors and individual members have been reporting to the National Office that most folks have their own medical (accident) insurance coverage through their jobs or families. Note, while the medical (accident) insurance policy will not be re-newed after May 21, 2005, the USJJF (& USMAF) will continue to provide insurance coverage for its major tournaments.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the United States Ju-Jitsu Federation, I am very pleased to announce that USJJF continues to provide an outstanding Insurance Program for its individual members and registered clubs. This program is made possible through the cooperative efforts of the USJJF and our Partner Organization, the United States Martial Arts Federation (USMAF). As a result of the "working partnership" of these two National Organizations, we are able to provide outstanding insurance coverage for our members and clubs at a very reasonable cost.  Note: Effective 15 August 2004, Our Medical (Accident) Insurance Coverage is Optional for Our Members.

Accident Coverage for Insured Members

Effective May 21, 2002, individual insured members continue to receive personal accident insurance of $25,000.00 with only a $25.00 deductible. (Some other organizations offer similar coverage, but their deductible is $1,000.00 or more.) We are striving to provide this insurance program for our members at the lowest possible cost. The annual insurance fee for each member will be $15.00 This accident insurance is excess medical coverage, which means if you have another medical insurance policy, USJJF's policy is secondary to your other policy. This accident insurance program is mandatory for all USJJF members. When you attend a USJJF sanctioned event, (i.e., camp, seminar, course, competition, etc.) you will need to show you membership / insurance card. This coverage only applies during sanctioned events or supervised training at USJJF clubs, as well as traveling to & from these events.

If you are already a USJJF member, please complete the insurance form, from our website, and attach your $15.00 to the form. If you are a USJJF Life Member, you need only to complete the USJJF Annual Insurance Form. Mail the form and fees to the USJJF National Office to receive your new USJJF Membership / Insurance Card! New members must use the USJJF membership form. Your USJJF accident insurance is effective the date your insurance forms & fees arrive at the National Office. This coverage will always be excess over any other medical insurance carried.

Note: Coverage is not valid in any case where projectile weapons or kickboxing are involved.

You must sign the approved waiver and release document that is part of the insurance and membership forms.

This policy does provide coverage for a wide scope of supervised general training and competition in self-defense, kata, exhibition, grappling and free fighting, including but not limited to the competition rules of the United States Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJF) and the Ju-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF). This policy does NOT provide coverage for participant versus participant claims.

Note: All competitions must be approved & sanctioned by the USJJF. Strict adherence to required safety equipment must be followed, otherwise the coverage is not valid. As a minimum, insured members must wear when participating in fighting the following: hand pads, mouth protector, groin cup protector (required for males), shin/instep pads. Chest protectors are recommended for female participants. The USJJF and JJIF competition rules are available in the "competition section" of the USJJF official website at www.usjjf.org

The Insurance coverage is purchased by the USJJF on an annual basis. It is the intent of the Federation to renew this policy each year. Your coverage extends for one year from the date your membership / insurance card is processed at the National Office.

Another important point: Your Insurance is provided under an "association" policy specifically purchased for the United States Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJF), and the United States Martial Arts Federation (USMAF). You only need to pay for the insurance "once" even if you have membership in more than one of these organizations. The insurance records for each of the above organizations are maintained in the data base at our National Office.

Liability Insurance Coverage for USJJF Clubs

The minimum club size is ten insured members to receive two million ($2,000,000.) dollars FREE general and participant legal liability insurance. This policy is for both types of liability insurance coverage. This means that teachers and officials are covered for accidents that happen both "on and off" the mat or training area of the club, as well as during club events or sanctioned events. Organizations with more than one training location (or facility) must register each location as a separate club. The minimum club size is ten (10) USJJF members for each location. However, Note: All club participants must be current insured USJJF members in order for the Certificate of Insurance to be issued and the Liability Coverage to be in effect. A Certificate of Insurance will be mailed to the club when a "Request for Insurance Form" has been completed certifying that all participants in your club are registered USJJF members and mailed to the National Office.

NOTE: Participant Legal Liability coverage is contingent upon Participant Accident Insurance being carried by or on behalf of the participants. USJJF insurance is required for all active members and it makes good common sense to have everyone in your dojo covered by USJJF Insurance! Note: this policy has a very low deductible in comparison to many other martial arts organization policies.

To enroll in this outstanding insurance program, simply complete the USJJF Membership or Insurance Form for yourself and your students. The total annual fee is $40.00 per person ($25.00 annual membership and the $15.00 Insurance fee.). Send the forms and appropriate fees to the USJJF National Office. Each member will receive a new USJJF Membership / Insurance Card and a US JU-JITSU Patch!

The USJJF now provides both Type "A" Sanctions for "Member Only" Competitions or other Events, as well as Type "B" Sanctions for "Open" Championships & other Events involving both USJJF Members and Non-Members:

USJJF Insurance Coverage for Competition & Other Events involving only USJJF Members , (a Type "A" Sanctioned Competition or Event)

Each application for sanction is reviewed separately. Sanction Applications (with the proper fees) should be received by the National Office at least 30 days prior to event. Insurance coverage is $1,000,000. liability protection for the officials & volunteers of the event. To request a sanction for your event, please complete the USJJF Application for Sanction Form and send it with the proper fee to the USJJF National Office, 1850 Columbia Pike, Ste. # 613, Arlington, VA 22204 USA.

For competition or other events with 301 or greater anticipated participants, send application with the "300" anticipated participants fee, the hosting club will be billed for additional fees after the event.

After the sanctioned event, the hosting club must complete the Competition/Event Report and pay a $1.00 competitor / participant fee to the USJJF National Office.

The USJJF reserves the right to send observers to sanctioned events to verify the number of competitors or participants. USJJF observers will also verify that adequate facilities and program are provided to include safety equipment, certified referees, & medical supplies/personnel and other related equipment.

The competition or event announcement and entry/registration form must be attached to the application for sanction. All officials and volunteers acting on behalf of the tournament director or event host are covered with the $1,000,000.00 liability insurance. Tournament directors may name additional insured parties (landlords, sponsors, co-promoters and all others to be approved by the underwriter and endorser) on the application for sanction.

USJJF Insurance Coverage for Competition & Other Events involving both USJJF Members and Non-Members, (a Type "B" Sanctioned Competition or Event).

Type "B" Sanctions: To sanction & conduct an "Open Seminar or Camp" hosted by a USJJF Registered Club with "Non-Member" Instructors and or Students participating, the insurance fee is $2.00 per "non-member" per day = payable to USJJF. Minimum Fee is $50.00 for this type of USJJF Seminar or Camp! Note: The Hosting Club must have a current Certificate of Liability Insurance through USJJF. The Insurance Coverage is both our Liability of $1,000,000.00 and the $25,000.00 Medical (Accident) for all participants, volunteers, staff and spectators. (deductible = $25.00 on Medical Expenses)

To sanction & hold an "Open Ju-Jitsu Tournament" hosted by a USJJF Registered Club involving both USJJF members and non-members, the flat insurance fee is $325.00 = payable to USJJF. All competitors, officials, volunteers, staff & spectators are covered by both USJJF's Liability and Medical (Accident) Coverage. Note: The Hosting Club must have a current Certificate of Liability Insurance through USJJF.

The USJJF Waiver and Release of Liability and Agreement to Participate form must be completed by every competitor or participant and filed by the tournament director or event host. Failure to complete this form may invalidate the insurance coverage. All sanctioned competitions or events must provide individuals the opportunity to join and become insured USJJF members, prior to the start of such events.

All hosts or directors of sanctioned USJJF events are reminded that a Competition/Event Report form will be included in the package of materials they receive when their event is approved for a sanction and event insurance coverage. The Competition/Event Report must be completed and returned to the USJJF National Office. Failure to complete and return the report will result in refusal to provide further sanctions and insurance to the director/host.

Note: This insurance policy is provided with Warrantees and Representations that are guaranteed by the USJJF. These warrantees and representations relate to medical insurance, use of waivers, sanction provisions and the use of the USJJF / JJIF competition rules.

SUMMARY

The United States Ju-Jitsu Federation is very proud to provide this new insurance program for its members and clubs. As stated previously, this "association" policy covers the USJJF and several of its key "Partners" in the martial arts community. In 2001, the USJJF celebrated 30 years of providing outstanding service to American Ju-Jitsu and our American Ju-Jitsuka participated in the WORLD GAMES in Akita Japan. US JU-JITSU has come a "long ways" and we are just getting "warmed up". We are now preparing for the 2002 & 2004 JJIF World Championships and the 2005 WORLD GAMES in Germany!
